WARNING!

Note:  If you came to this page looking for advice on electronics, rear -seat DVD entertainment, CD or sound system upgrades, you'll be disappointed. This van has the original factory AM-FM/cassette radio, no power windows, seats or door locks, not even privacy glass. If you need to review vehicle electrical basics, I highly recommend a visit to the12volt.com site

Fun and entertainment is provided by three pedals!  But, we will show you how to make the critical electrical wiring changes to accommodate the Sequential Multi Port (fuel) Injection (SMPI) Turbo-SBEC (Chrysler's Single Board Engine Computer or ECM)  on a 1993, Gen-2, 4-cylinder, Mopar TBI minivan. Remember, the color codes and wiring pins or circuit ID's are vehicle specific and do vary across Mopar body types and years. But the basic concepts should prove helpful.

Required  Wiring changes for TBI-to-Turbo Conversion:

A stock 1990-91 Turbo I  SBEC (automatic - Mopar P/N P4529999; manual - Mopar P/N 4529998) and 804 injectors will be used initially and boost will be vacuum-limited (actuator connected to vacuum source) during the break-in period (first 1500 miles) to 7 PSI.) A switch-operated vacuum solenoid will be used to provide two-stages of boost, once the break-in period is completed. But let's get back to the basic wiring and ECM changes required to convert from throttle-body NA to boosted SMPI:

There are six mandatory wiring circuit changes required to convert this 1993 SBEC TBI to 1990-91SBEC, SMPI TURBO I spec. A seventh, optional circuit is required for intercooler-enabled SBEC's (TURBO II/III/IV) to monitor intake manifold Charge Air temps.

  1. Add three additional Sequential (Multi port) Injector circuits & connectors.

  2. Add Detonation Sensor circuit & connector.

  3. Add Fuel SYNC sensor (on new Distributor) & connector.

  4. Extend the existing TPS and AIS harness to the relocated Throttle Body.

  5. Accommodate the Baro-Read Solenoid by removing the High Speed Fan Circuit. (There are various ways to handle this, but I let the 1990-91 SBEC have radiator/AC fan control of the high speed fan, while the low speed fan is wired to the Ignition switch, as my vehicle sees a lot of slow-moving urban traffic. Or you could add a dash-mounted, driver-controlled, fan switch.) I elected to replace the single 4-way fan connector with a pair of two-way Weather-Pak connectors to facilitate SBEC-controlled, high-speed fan operation.)

  6. Accommodate the Wastegate Solenoid by removing the Service Reminder Indicator Circuit from  the SBEC and re-routing the circuit to the Wastegate Solenoid. (Note: This circuit is not critical if you intend to control boost via other methods, and your local emissions "gendarmes" may require the SRI indicator to remain function ).

  7. Add (optional) Charge Air Temperature Sensor. This sensor is only used on intercooler applications (all IC ECM's, (Turbo II/III/IV) will turn on their CHECK ENGINE LIGHT if this sensor signal is low or missing) to monitor the intake manifold air temperature, after the intercooler. (Note: Turbo I SBEC's may ignore this signal and calculate air density/temp from monitoring ambient/battery temp and engine coolant temps.)
